THE SHANTI HOUSE

THIRD YEAR STUDIO PROJECT
Designing a home for the homeless in Tel Aviv // 2009
The Tel Aviv Shanti House provides a home for kids that are either homeless or come from broken families. The studio task was to design a new Shanti house on a set site located in south Tel Aviv, measuring at 70 m2. Our project was designed around a central ramp system that had different functions leading off the main ramp, each function being at a different height. The design and feel of the bedrooms, therapy rooms and other spaces were that of an open "wall-less" space that gave the children an inside-out experience within the building site in an otherwise dense and dilapidated urban area. The building design integrated many elements of eco-friendly construction including a geothermal heating/cooling system, green roofs, green walls, recyclable building materials, and carefully designed airflow and sunlight exposure.
